Ladd Observatory Rebranding

InDesign, AfterEffects, Photoshop, Illustrator | 2019-2021

Ladd Observatory, of Brown University, is an important part of history for astronomy and timekeeping within Providence, Rhode Island. The following designs are the rebranding of the logo and identity of this monumental observatory. This includes merchandise, campaign ideas, and social media involvement.

Challenge

I strongly believe that Ladd Observatory is an under-appreciated landmark. While researching the building, I was surprised that it didn't only hold the function of observing the stars through its telescope; it has a hand in the history of timekeeping! My challenge for this project was to explore different ways the observatory could encourage local residents and university students alike to become more interested in the cosmos beyond earth.

Process

Many observatory logos default to the literal observatory building or telescope. Thus, I decided to deviate to a more figurative or simplified representation of
a logo. I settled on the idea of a moon being framed or measured by something. Not only is there a stronger connection to the observatory's abbreviation,
I want to callback to the scientific and empirical nature of astronomy.

Campaign Idea:

Eclipse Event

An eclipse is a rare event to witness, and unfortunately you have to be in just the right region to be able to view it. Fortunately, with modern streaming services, it's still possible to digitally view an eclipse from the effected area. The next total solar eclipse happens in the late evening April 20th, 2023. And a solar eclipse usually happens 2 weeks before or after a lunar eclipse. In this case, May 5th. I designed posters and signage that could be coupled to advertise a streaming event on the lawn of the Ladd Observatory.
